CASE STUDY

Insomnia

Marie Brighton is a 50 year old woman with a long history of sleep dysfunction.

She attributes her poor sleep to long-standing ‘worries’ and states that she never really slept properly again after having children. She has used benzodiazepines intermittently for many years and has tried herbal sleep remedies, melatonin and cognitive behavioural therapy without improvement.

A sleep study 2 months ago was negative and she has no symptoms to suggest obstructive sleep apnoea. She assures you that she follows good sleep hygiene practices. Her medical history is generally unremarkable other than borderline high cholesterol and blood pressure.

Marie lives with her husband Ron and her two teenage children.
